Pulpotomy

When decay gets into the pulp of a child’s primary tooth, it can cause pain and discomfort. We like to save primary (or baby) teeth as long as we can because it holds the space for the permanent teeth to erupt. When these teeth are lost early due to decay, the permanent teeth can come in crowded, and can even be blocked out completely by the other teeth. This causes the child to need expensive orthodontic treatment later on.

A pulpotomy is done in an attempt to save the child’s primary tooth when the pulp is infected. The pulp tissue is removed as in the pictured image and a medicated filling is placed. The tooth is then restored with either a stainless steel crown or a white composite filling as in the photo.
